Kelowna RCMP vs. The People

January 16, 2011

There’s a trend I find alarming when it comes to officers’ use of force with citizens. There’s story after story of panicked reactions, excessive force and violence. This can’t continue, but how will it stop? I’d like to say “If this keeps going, someone will get killed.” Someone did get killed and it’s still going. I’d also like to forecast that “If this keeps up, we’ll be living in a police state.” Well, we tolerated that in Toronto for a few days already. When will we have enough?

You Don’t Take Debit, But You’ve Got An ATM Where I Can Get Cash For $2.50?

January 11, 2011

Something else I’ve noticed is that the two most attractive pubs on my block aren’t interested in accepting debit as payment. Steamworks and The Charles don’t accept debit cards.
I’m not a fan of throwing down my credit card everywhere I go, so I gave this a bit of thought – why might it be that debit cards are shunned?

TEDxVancouver 2010 Follow-up Post

December 24, 2010

If your leaders aren’t at their best, think about that. Why do you follow them? The only asset you control on this earth is your time and you only have so much. Why do you commit yours to those you follow and what makes it worthwhile?

I was a little bit beside myself to get the official invitation to TEDxVancouver 2010. I’ve caught wind that many people weren’t all that keen to apply to go to a conference because a subjective application wreaks of elitism, but applying was time well spent for me. I suppose that with TED videos being available for free online, there’s a sense that all of TED is about being open and accessible. It’s really not, though.

Happy Hallowe’en

November 1, 2010

My Transit Experience

October 30, 2010

Over the past 11 months, Translink, has started to become my personal version of Mad Men’s Don Draper before he went into advertising: Looking sharp, saying all the right things, strapped for cash and looking for a big change because what’s going on isn’t working out too well. Then there’s the factor of trying to put me into the driver’s seat of a used car…

October 19, 2010

I had spent a lot of time listening to the folks who ‘defaulted to no’ that thought they were saving me from failures and wasted efforts, but this was mostly my own hesitations being justified. So identify the 5 people in your life that Default To Yes and truly embrace their presence in your life.
